This Girl Rocks- Nicole Atkins
There's a voice in my head and it keeps singing sweet songs. I hear it when I wake up and sometimes it comes to me throughout the course of the day. When this happens I must put on "Neptune City" by Nicole Atkins. Afterall, it's her beautiful, powercharged vocals that welcomely haunt me, and probably everyone else who has become addicted to her music.

Like most of the Planet Verge staff, Atkins is a Jersey girl. The one regret I have about this is that I never really gave her a second thought while she was up-an-coming in the Asbury Park scene. It's weird because I always knew her name, and being a publicist for so many of the NJ locals (Val Emmich, Hero Pattern, The Parlor Mob, Perfuma, Readymade Breakup, etc.) and running a NJ-based fanzine for six years, you'd think I'd be at a show with Nicole Atkins on the bill. But I swear, it never happened. So even though I may be a little late on the bandwagon, I still take pride in our shared roots. When my fiance happened to catch her at Maxwells and came home raving, I knew it was time to take the initiative and get my hands on a CD.
Lately, I've taken a keen interest in female vocalists. In particular, songs like "Bad News" by Aimee Allen and "I'm Not Cool" by Sohodolls became instant favorites. The jazzy, retro appeal of those songs really got me hooked. And what do you know, Nicole Atkins is a glorius package of jazzy alt. folk rock. Exactly the "more" for which I've been searching. The exact opposite of the songs which I usually listen.
Check her out on www.myspace.com/nicoleatkins, but be warned, the tracks alone don't do her justice. "Neptune City" is an ALBUM. The total package. Something that should be listened to from begining to end. It's only then, that you'll get the full reward.
Tracks to try: "The Way It Is," "Brooklyn's On Fire," & "Love Surreal"
*By Joelle, who is listening to track 6, "Love Surreal," right now.

Bad News Is So Good

Just had to drop a quick note and urge you all to go listen to my favorite new song, "Bad News," by Aimee Allen. I'm really digging the 1920's vibe, sorta like "I'm Not Cool," by Sohodolls. Wouldn't be fun if more artists were more adventurous in their sound and jumped outside the box to explore a musical style other than the one that's expected from them?

Aimee wrote this one for the ladies. We can all relate to this one. Well,
actually she wrote it for a TV show pilot, but still. She's got a lot on the horizon, including recording another solo album and writing songs for the film "Pretty Ugly People."

In a few weeks, we'll know if Scott and Aimee's "Miss America" wins the best PUNK song in the Independent Music Awards. Fingers crossed. Go vote here http://www.musiciansatlas.com/pages/imafinalist/ and don't forget to vote for Val Emmich's video while you're there!

Free Sohodolls Downloads!
Just weeks after the release of its debut album, RIBBED MUSIC FOR THE NUMB GENERATION, Sohodolls has received an impressive 15 adds for the band’s video, “Right and Right Again,” on national, multi-regional and Internet programming outlets.
“Right And Right Again,” Sohodolls’ lead U.S. single (currently in rotation on KROQ in Los Angeles), declares war on anybody who dares to stand in the band’s path to success – and from the way front woman Maya Von Doll delivers it, you know she’s not kidding around. Obviously, this is no fey electropop band: here’s the rare dance act that can slug it out with the rockers.
They’ve proved it onstage: Sohodolls has a well-deserved reputation for furious, chaotic, in-your-face live performances. The band has taken its act all over Europe and shared bills with Daft Punk, The Charlatans and The Magic Numbers, just to name a few.
NME wrote “If the ultimate purpose of modern rock music is to communicate to how entirely fantastic and prolific at sex you are, then Sohodolls are the best band who ever lived,” calling the London based buzz-band “expert purveyors of entirely perverted and deceptively witty sexlectro.”
See for yourself.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Good:
- The new Rooney album, Calling The World; especially "Believe In Me," "Love Me or Leave Me," the title track... Well, darn it, the whole thing with the exception of "Are You Afraid Of Me," which is too slow for an upbeat band and sounds out of place on this record.
- The new Junior Varsity, Cinematographic; especially "I Went Blind," "The Sky"--they're filming a video for that one right now!--and, again, dammit, the whole thing. It's really hard to narrow down. The instrumentation on this album is absolutely sick. If you like shredding, sarcasm, and killer hooks, this is for you. It also features a cameo on "Wunderdrug" by Ken Vasoli of The Starting Line, which leads me to...
- The new Starting Line, Direction; especially "Island" (the first single), and "21." It's classic TSL fare: catchy, earnest, and just a tiny bit lyrically old at times: Kenny, we get it, you grew up on the road and people bitched about your hair. We know. And we love you anyway. This record also marks the band's departure from Drive-Thru and onto major label Virgin.
- The Soho Dolls are starting to get their British behinds in American gear, and damn, they're good. Think Shiny Toy Guns, only better. And hotter. Oh, yes.
- Under the Influence of Giants. Not only do they make the best dance rock I've heard in quite some time, but they're also really down to earth. I sent them a myspace message asking where I can purchase their new song "On My Own" so I could listen to it on my upcoming flight to Texas, and it turns out, they answered me within five minutes asking for my e-mail so they could send me a present. Keep in mind that I've never met them and they didn't have much incentive to send it to me because I said nothing about being a music writer in my message. They're sweet. And schweeeeeet.
The Bad:
- I don't care how much buzz, hype, etc. surrounds Feist--I can't wrap my head around a song that counts "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10." I suck at math, and even I know there's two numbers missing.
- While the thunder was keeping me awake last night, I decided to watch Cops, in which I counted no less than four instances of arrests without suspects being read their Miranda rights. Oink!
The Ugly:
- As a fan of Neil Strauss' The Game, I was crazy excited to watch the premiere of The Pick Up Artist on VH1, in part so I could put a face to the characters I'd read about. While Mystery is pretty hot, I can guarantee you that "Matador" and "J-Dog" would be regarded as a tool and gay, respectively, by me if I was to be approached by them at a club. "Matador" has slicked back hair and an angry, devious looking face. "J-Dog" looks like the crackbaby lovechild of Thom Yorke, Paul Reubens (better known as "Pee Wee Herman"), and Johnny Rotten. I pray that Pradip, Spoon, and the rest don't follow figurative and literal suit.

No Regrets...

...if you go listen to this band now: SOHO DOLLS
Hailing from Soho, LONDON--not New York City--Sohodolls are an electro glam rock band ala Shiny Toy Guns but better. On the mic is Maya von Doll, a sexy frontwoman with the balls of Scott Weiland (she's known to get shirtless at shows with nothing more than masking tape across her nipples). Their music video for "Stripper" is so hot you'll have to pour water over yourself when you're done watching it. And that's all I'm gonna say because you should be listening to them instead of reading this!
