The Devil Wears Prada CD/DVD Re-Release!

It came out this past Tuesday and it has been well worth the wait. My good friend Ben filmed the DVD and I must say, it came out awesome. If you are a fan of TDWP or you just like checking out new music and getting a sneak peak at what life on the road is like... This is an investment you should make.

Be sure to check out The Devil Wears Prada on the "American Siege Tour" with UNDEROATH, and Saosin!!

**By Amanda, who has a kick-booty costume for tomorrow.

UnderOATH is Set to Take on the World.

In an age where the most popular radio hits are those that follow the trends and give in to what they know is safe, those artists are rarely remembered when the trends evolve. Thankfully there are still some bands that stay true to their beliefs and make an album condensed with raw emotion that unless used in a creative context would never be uttered as words and blend together a perfect mess of transcending creative mayhem. That is just what UnderOATH has done with their latest full-length success, Lost in the Sound of Separation, they achieved and went above and beyond.

This album is a collaboration of naked emotion that reveals both triumph and defeat and the pursuit of devastatingly furious instrumentals to accompany the audacious and guttural screams of vocalist Spencer Chamberlain. The sound on this album is bombastic and hard-rocking yet it’s crisp and refined. This album will crawl under your skin and entice your senses.

Without a doubt Lost in the Sound of Separation is one of the top 3 albums of 2008.

After selling out shows in 8 different countries around the world, UnderOATH is back on American soil to do similar. The ‘American Siege Tour’ (covering 34 dates nationwide) is being supported by two of the biggest alternative/hardcore bands out there right now, Saosin (who just released a new full length on Capital Records) and The Devil Wears Prada (whom this week had the major re-release of their sophomore success, Plagues). Only about two weeks into the tour many of the dates thus far have been selling out.

Terminal 5 in New York City, which has a capacity of 3,000, hosted one of the stops on the tour. Even though the show was on a Sunday night and school was being anticipated the next day, kids came out and brought illuminating energy.

Spencer’s vocals throughout the entire set were memorizing. His intense screams boosted by his melodic singing parts gave their live performance such depth. Every aspect of the instrumentals are tight enough to make the sounds cohesive yet loose enough to make the music full. UnderOATH’s performance is well rounded and jaw dropping but it’s the gall they put behind the delivery that makes the walls around you shake.

At one point in their set Spencer’s mic cut out and what were we left with? Those lucky enough to be standing up against the barrier and close to the stage were able to hear his voice in the raw, never once did he let up or draw attention to the fact that there was some equipment failure. Some of those kids that got to experience it passed by me as they were walking out. I could see them grabbing the sides of their heads and blinking heavily as if they had seen a ghost, they described Spencer in those few moments as “God-like” and “one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

UnderOath give’s kids a hardcore/rock concert they will not soon forget.

POS, a ‘hip-hopper’ out of Minnesota, was such a cool way kick off a night of hardcore rock. He is a one-man show, do not underestimate him just because he doesn’t travel with a posse (but now he has the support and friendship of the rockers on this tour), he brings it to the stage and draws the crowd in with his REAL lyrics and catchy beats. If you have not had a chance to check him out, or he is not going to be playing at the UnderOATH tour date you are attending, check our his MySpace and give him a listen.

“Planet Verge’s Warped Tour Band of the Year,” The Devil Wears Prada is also an opener on this tour. They have been drawing out a solid crowd every night of the tour and have been selling mountains of merchandise, which you will be seeing on the streets any minute now. The Devil Wears Prada’s live performance is full of life and has matured and grown since their summer on Warped Tour. In between Warped Tour and now they took some time to write and refine themselves as musicians, it shows instrumentally, vocally, and is evident through the performance of a brand new song. They are one of the strongest bands in the genre today. There impact is immeasurable and their music is fast becoming an IPod essential. Spring 2009 has been slated for the release of their next studio album. Keep your eyes and your ears open.

For the past two years Saosin has been riding the train of success generated by their self-entitled album, they came to this tour with a newly released LP and a rejuvenated and awe-inspiring performance. Lead singer, Cover Reber, has such a versatile vocal range. He is able to achieve deep guttural screams and then sing with a crisp and unique tone capable of giving anyone goose bumps. While there old songs were the obvious crowd favorite, their new ones were greeted with open arms and given positive feed back.

This tour, without a doubt, is one of the most talent packed we will see over the next year. Each band is linked together by their alternative roots yet each band has their own interpretation and creative take on the music making art form. The entire concert was like reading a book, each band a chapter and each song kept you wanting to read more.

WARPED TOUR 2008

For music loving kids across the country the summer is more than just an opportunity to sleep late, it’s a season jam packed with tours and festivals showcasing the year’s greatest musical acts. One of the summer’s hottest tickets and a tour that certainly stands out among the rest is Van’s Warped Tour (which happens to be truckin’ through its 14th summer). Those that have attended this particular tour in the past know that it’s a day filled with tightly packed crowds, excessive merchandise purchases, being covered in sweat (your sweat and the sweat of about a thousand other individuals), minimal cell service, but mainly it’s a day you get the heart pounding experience of watching some of your favorite bands take the stage.

This year Warped Tour is decked out with appearances by bands such as The Bouncing Souls, Cobra Starship, We The Kings, Gym Class Heroes, Sky Eats Airplane, and Katy Perry to name a few. With such a diverse line up, this year’s tour gave bands the opportunity to play to more than just their target audience. Warped Tour always does a tremendous job of opening ears to new bands and genres.

After attending multiple dates and mingling with the masses I found that the quality of bands were of the upper crust of listening entertainment, but like every festival there were a few that REALLY stood out and left me with that “post show glow.” (Side Bar- By “post show glow” I mean that feeling you have after watching something truly spectacular happen on the stage before you- it’s that happiness emanating from your person and that fluttery feeling in your stomach.) Here’s a glimpse at what makes Warped Tour the summer fest to be reckoned with-

Warped Tour "Band of the Year"- THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

In the past few months one has become hard pressed to walk through a mall or down the street without spotting at least one person sporting this bands eye catching merch. Since the release of their latest album titled Plagues the band has been launched into a whirlwind of success which shows no signs of letting up. In the past year The Devil Wears Prada has completed tours with bands such as Scary Kids Scaring Kids and Chiodos; for this summer’s Warped Tour the band has been contracted to the Hurley stage where they have been performing in and amongst All Time Low, We the Kings, The Color Fred, and several more.

While their CD speaks novels about the talent and potential this band possesses, it is their epic live performance that will catch the attention and captivate the ears of any music lover. Each member brings a unique energy and vibe to the stage that enhances the overall performance. The instrumentals featured on the album are intricate and full, they are just as powerful and impressive in a live setting. Vocally this band is a powerhouse; Mike has a “gravely” vocal range that rivals the most talented in the industry and produces shockwaves that add more depth and personality to the mainly heavy sounding songs the band is notorious for. Guitarist Jeremy, contributes the more melodic vocal parts, providing catchy interludes and choruses. Jeremy’s voice is certainly unique, and can send chills down your spine; his voice stands out brilliantly against the harsh growls of screamer Mike. The tonal departure from Mike’s growls creates an impermeable hold on your attention and allows for the transition to more melodic riffs and breakdowns in the instrumentals.

Before the band even took the stage kids were gathering in front of the Hurley stage, packing themselves in tightly with hopes to push their way to the front. They opened up with what seemed to be a crowd favorite, “Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over” and played other crowd pleasers such as their Punk Goes Crunk cover, “Still Fly”, and their two hit singles “HTML Rulez Dood” and “Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?” as their set came to a close I could see that they delivered everything the crowd came for. Day after day this band takes the stage and leaves kids with that feeling of confidence and joy, this band seems to be doing with ease what some bands work a lifetime to achieve; they are leaving a musical impression and inspiring youth with their words and music. The band is talented enough to leave this impression on their listeners and onlookers, yet they are humble enough to acknowledge they still want to take their music to new levels; they still want to climb musical mountains. I say with confidence that The Devil Wears Prada is my pick for Warped Tour’s Band of the Year.

BONE PALACE BALLET TOUR!

Just When You Think You Couldn’t Find A Better Tour....

As unfortunate as the weather may have been on Monday, the music was far from it. The Nokia theater was hit with more than just some rain and fog- it was hit with some of the most anticipated bands on the rise. It was one of the last stop on the Bone Palace Ballet Tour. Each of the bands brings their own flair to the stage this created variation in the style of their performances, but all the sounds are married by their unique underlying alternative-rock foundation. There was nearly something for everyone who loves rock music.

The Bone Palace Ballet Tour had more talented acts than fans could know what to do with. As much of a tragedy as this is, kids are often hard pressed to find a tour that has more than one band that they love…this one did. Scary Kids jumped on board with the likes of The Devil Wears Prada, Emery, and Chiodos (headliner) to form one of the craziest, most talent packed tours of 2007. There’s more noise, more talent, more merch, and more antics.

Almost every band on the tour was promoting a new release and showcasing their new songs. Each set was musically moving and powerfully energetic grabbing the crowd and running with each song they played. Usually you go to a tour like this to see one or two of the bands playing, but for this show you go wanting to see all. There was not a band on the bill that didn't make you wanna dance and scream.

The excitement outside the venue started around 2 pm when loving fans started to line the sidewalks…keep in mind; doors were at 6:30. As I walked by the groups of kids forming outside the venue, I could see and feel in the inaudible displays of excitement. I will never tire of seeing those little pre-show twitches- the ever present ear to ear smile, the perfectly parted and sometimes gelled hair, the rolling of the feet (which are often being stowed away in Chucks), the precision eyeliner, and the point and shoot cameras, and the excitement emanating from every breath they took. You could hear the screams as the venue doors opened as fans prayed for a glimpse.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

It was my first time seeing The Devil Wears Prada and my expectations were high; I am fan of their latest album Plagues and had hoped that they would be able to translate the hypnotizing metal core sound into a reality on the stage. They exceeded my expectations. Mike grabbed the mic and within seconds was expelling a power house of vocals. Not only is he only about 19 years old, he is probably one of the most consistently talented "screamers" in the biz...his singing isn't horrible either. The melodic riffs and thumping harmonies that accompany the vocals are nothing to look past. One thing I loved about the performance was every bit of energy that Mike expelled to the crowd, the crowd reciprocated.

While this band may be criticized for being just another metal core band, I think they need to take another listen. They may be following the metal core lead, but they have their own unique touch that in my eyes lends itself to longevity and exploration of the genre that others may never have the guts to venture into. They are all still very young guys, two of them just graduated high school for goodness sake, they still have much to experience, for experience is what often takes talented group of musicians and turns them into a solid successful band. If this is where they are today…

SCARY KIDS SCARING KIDS

Enter Scary Kids Scaring Kids. I have seen them more times than I can count, well, it's more like I lost count. What can I say? This band never ceases to amaze me with their consistent jaw dropping performance. SKSK was my first interview EVER, and whenever they are around I try and make it out to their show to give some support. Having to go to a lot of shows is the name of the game with music journalism, the bands that truly stick out in my mind at the end of the day are not necessarily bands that produced an amazing album, but they are more often than not bands that blew me away with a live performance. For me, Scary Kids is one of those bands.

Scary Kids has the ability to take alternative rock to the next level and leave you with a high of music that is indescribable. Between the ever maturing vocals of Tyson and the catchy, catchy tunes bellowing from Pouyan's keys you can not help but get drawn in. The guitar riffs are always dead on, and even with rockin' a new drummer, they never skip a beat. They performed many new songs, such as Degenerates, The Deep End, and Faces along with older tunes like The City Sleeps in Flames. Scary Kids performance in NYC really impressed me, the way that the performed (dead on) and the way that they interact with the crowd and draw them in is truly something cool to watch. They are a band that really gives the crowd something to scream over. Their performance is always filled with elements that draw in the crowd; there was never a dull moment.

It is one thing to be able to pull of a performance and leave your fans wanting more, it is another to play EVERY performance and leave everyone wanting more. Even though there has been some speculation that the sound departure from their last album to their current release was premature and something that their fans might not be ready to greet with open arms, I beg to differ. Open your arms wide because their sound and talent played and displayed on this album is larger than you could ever get your arms around, so start wrapping your ears around it folks, be part of this stream towards the very top. There new sound is fitting to their musical progression and drive to always be creating the best music they can, but more so, creating something that they are proud of and will be proud of 40 years from now.

EMERY

Emery is another band that I have experienced either hit or miss success as far as their albums and recorded songs go, I think that with their songwriting they either hit the nail on the head as far as a consumable sound that their fans will dig, or they just slightly miss, however, they are a band that is always great live. Each charismatic member brings something entertaining to the performance and always leaves you with a smile. While their album may not grab you their performance will leave you a fan. At first thought their music is not necessarily the perfect match for this style tour, but after hearing their new stuff and watching their live act, there is not doubt that they are certainly a great band to have in the line up and an incredible talent. They have been around for a little longer than some of the other bands, their experience shows. They know what their fans love, and they certainly give it to them. I enjoyed seeing Emery perform again, and would never pass up another opportunity to see them.

CHIODOS

CHIODOS! (chee-O-dose) I have been corrected many a time. Boys and girls, it is pronounced CHEE-O-DOSE. The show got kicked off with the spotlight on Craig, he opened the show with a light acoustic song that grabbed everyone’s attention, and then immediately following the rest of the band hit the stage- entangled the crowd in rock euphoria. Craig's ability to do vocal gymnastics and make his voice soar to reach hair raising notes and send chills down your spine is undeniable. The unique way in which Craig's vocals and dynamic lyrics compliment the insane instrumentals is a testament to the overall connection between band members. The dynamic guitar riff’s and heart pounding bass lines generate alternative rock bliss. The intensity and concentration that each band member brings to the stage makes watching their performance more than just a live concert, it makes it an entire musical experience. The way that the band incorporated orchestral schemes gave their harder rock sound a soft edge. When Craig looks out into the crowd his eyes undoubtedly meet your and the music and message becomes personal. Making a connection with the crowd is one of the most challenging tasks a band of this nature has to conquer, and they have. During the band’s set they performed older tunes along with newer songs such as “Is it Progression If a Cannibal Uses a Fork?” and “Lexington (Joey Pea Pot with a Monkey Face)”.

While their new album Bone Palace Ballet is incredibly complex and multi-layered (kinda like an onion) the band can perform it, they wrote an album that is certainly a little out there, but it is musically advanced and conveys each member’s talent and creativity- their performance is nothing less than that.
