Bamboozle Comedian Spotlight: Greg Coralluzzo

Hitting up Bamboozle on Saturday? (We're sure you are)

You won't want to miss our very own resident comedian, Greg Coralluzzo, who will be performing on the Pass the Mic Stage.

(Greg at Bamboozle last year)

Set times aren't being released yet, so keep an eye out for it once you're there.

In the mean time, get your laugh on:

A bit about Greg's World:

Did you hear that one about the guy who by day works as a nurse and by night tells tales of delirious ER patients, Nintendo, dragons and lobsters to audiences at his stand-up shows? Then it's time to get acquainted with Greg Coralluzzo.

Coralluzzo was exposed to evoking laughter as an art form at an early age, through his comedian father. Growing up in suburban New Jersey, he garnered a reputation as everyone's favorite class clown. After graduating high school, Coralluzzo began pursuing comedy full-time. He earned his chops by studying under The American Comedy Institute's Steven Rosenfeld, who has trained top jokesters including Jim Gaffigan.

Today Coralluzo gigs at prestigous venues such as Rascals, Gotham, Caroline’s and Standup New York. He has opened for comic greats including Jerry Seinfeld, Shane Mauss, Gary Gulman, Mike Burbiglia, Pete Coreale, Robert Kelly and Mike Yard.

(Greg didn't forget his friends while he roamed Paris)

In addition to live appearances, Coralluzzo can be seen on screen in The Glorius Mustache Challenge. He took part in the headline-making documentary that received rave reviews through print, Web, radio and television across the country. As one of the brave young men to take part in the mustache growing experiment, Coralluzzo shined on camera and cracked up viewers as he revealed the social disgrace he received from women who were not fond of his prickly upper lip. While promoting The Glorius Mustache, he appeared on The Today Show.

(Greg and his bro, The Banner's Joey Southside)

Coralluzzo also added a notch on his resume by performing on the Pass The Mic Comedy Tour, as part of the annual music extravaganza, The Bamboozle.

(Greg...actually, we don't want to know!)

Get Undressed With Hotspur

Hotspur proves once again why it is one of the most promising bands on the rise. The Maryland-based power-pop band is releasing "Beta Undressed," a stripped down version of their critically acclaimed debut "Beta." The album, which consists solely of piano and vocals, will be released nationally on April 29th.

While Hotspur is known for its energetic live performance and lush studio recordings, "Beta Undressed" shines a light on the softer side of Hotspur. It allows the listener to focus more on the core of the songs themselves, as well as giving vocalist Joe Mach and pianist Dave Trichter a chance to show their chops.

"This was a really fun project for us", says Mach. "It was an opportunity for us to step a little bit outside of what we're used to doing and explore these songs in new ways. I think listeners will definitely get that vibe from hearing the record."

The songs and arrangements have all been changed and reinvented, making it an exciting listen for those familiar with "Beta," but cohesive and complex enough to stand on its own. The result is an album that both old and new Hotspur fans will enjoy. The great thing is that the songs easily transfer over to simplistic versions and listener's won't feel like something is missing in the songs. They'll be singing along without a second thought.

"Beta Undressed" is now available from Hotspur's official website(www.hotspurmusic.com) and their myspace (www.myspace.com/hotspur). The album will be released digitally to online retailers including iTunes, Amazon, and others in June.

Keep an eye on tour dates--- Hotspur will hit roads across the US beginning May 23rd.

The Daily "Fresh 5"

Everyday this week I am going to do the "Fresh 5." It will be a list of 5 newer bands on the scene that I think are showing signs of a promising future and are certainly worth checking out. This year we have had some incredibly talented acts emerge, here are today's "Fresh 5" that I think are worth giving a good listen to this weekend...

1. SKY EATS AIRPLANE

2. LYDIA

3. THE COLOR FRED

4. OUR LAST NIGHT

5. WE THE KINGS

Band to Watch- SKY EATS AIRPLANE

As part of my "On the Verge" of Bamboozle celebration, I will be shining the spotlight on some of the bands I think are going to be a commanding presence over the weekend. This is a band that I believe is going to take Bamboozle, and the year a head by complete storm...

It's a rarity that I go out on a limb like this, but here goes nothing- I think I've officially found the "Band to Watch" for 2008. I know, I know...I'm a little behind considering its almost May however this band caught my attention months ago and after having the privilege to see them perform recently in NYC with Alesana, The Chariot, and Our Last Night, I am more confident than ever that Sky Eats Airplane is going to give the music scene a run for its money. The stir they started causing months ago was enough to catch the attention of labels and media across the country, but this tour has taken them to new levels, with each show they play they are gaining fans at an exponential rate and are taking over memory space on IPOD's and MP3's left and right. The buzz was loud enough to catch the attention of famed Equal Vision Records, Sky Eats Airplane was recently signed by them, a huge step in a successful direction.

There is something about this band, no really, there is just something about them. They explore the boundaries of a genre-on-the-rise, "hard-tronica" and between the mac-supported electronica background and the alternative metal riffs accompanying the top of the line screams this band is one of the more well rounded live performances I have seen to this day. SEA marries bombastic, jagged edged rock with cutting edge electronica beats and the result is freakin' cool. Sky Eats Airplane is not a generic product you will be able to find at the local super-market, they have kicked down the walls of conventional "safe" music and are plowing the field to create the foundation of a genre that will be hard to duplicate.

With the final touches to the line up complete (vocalist, Jerry), they have wasted no time, they immediately started work on an album that will be released later on this summer, July 22nd to be specific. The band is made up of Lee, Johno, Zack, Kenny, and Jerry. Each member brings their own flair and personality to the music and the diversity of sounds is just amazing. One of the first times I can say that the marriage of so many sounds is actually successful. After having talked with Lee (guitarist) their motives and goals have become clear, their passion rests in music, touring and most importantly giving everything they've got to the people that like and appreciate their alternative creativity.

Set to release an album in late July, Sky Eats Airplane has tours lined down the street and around the corner. Currently on a national tour with Alesana, they will finish that up in coming weeks then embark on another tour with the likes of A Skylit Drive which will lead into two weeks of "punk rock boot camp" on the 2008 Vans Warped Tour.

Stay tuned- I will be posting an interview I did with guitarist Lee Duck later on this week!

All of the proceeds and money goes towards creative programs for the NYC homeless, seniors, and disadvantaged children. These are the creative minds who don't have the same opportunities that you and I do. Their voices tell a story, too, so help them out.

Thanks for the love and support. I know I can count on you.

CLIVE DAVIS OUSTED AS SONYBMG CHIEF

Indie-Music.com reports

Until this week, the rules of the music industry didn't apply to
Clive Davis. At 76, Davis held the top job at SonyBMG's BMG Music
Group, playing Svengali to teen idols like Kelly Clarkson and
Alicia Keys. On Thursday, however, SonyBMG removed Davis from his
post. He will hold the amorphous title of "chief creative
officer" at the company, while still working with a handful of
acts. But the BMG Music Group will now be overseen by Barry
Weiss, CEO of SonyBMG's Zomba label, who is younger - and
presumably less expensive than his predecessor.

Shocking, but this could be a good thing. We need some fresh meat to start heading up labels. Here's looking towards a younger generation that's not afraid to take risks....

Concert Junkie: Say Hello to Pete and J

Mix Simon and Garfunkel harmonies with Wilco, add uniqueness; the result is Brooklyn duo Pete and J. Peter “Pete” Harper, from outside of Chicago, and Jason “J” Blynn from the south side of Philadelphia, have been spreading their voices across the U.S. and the U.K. Their songs send underlining, honest messages whether they’re about love, suburban life or politics.

“People who really like our music, end up getting the real viewpoint,” says Pete via cell phone. “We don’t stand on a pedestal and preach our views. Instead, we leave that with more of the context in the songs.”

Pete and J met at Amherst College in MA, and they both took turns being in charge of the world-renowned a capella group Zumbye, which tackled the Beatles Bob Marley, Ozzy and some Michael Jackson songs.

“We both wrote about 75 percent of the arrangements and even choreography for the group,” says J.
However, Pete thought “it was the geekiest thing in the whole world,” but eventually he became the leader of it.

“We learned so much,” says Pete. “People knew us and some 500-600 people would come see the group [Zumbye] perform. It was close to rock stardom.”

In-between their studies and a capella performances, the two picked up guitars and started crafting originals together. They were regulars at the Marsh Coffeehouse during their Amherst days. After J graduated, he lived and worked in Sao Paolo, Brazil as an English teacher. Pete visited his fellow band-mate where they talked about taking their music to the next level.
“Listening to Brazilian music and living in Brazil helped me gain a worldly perspective,” reflects J. “Portuguese is such a beautiful, lyrical language.”

Their very first recording, “A Few of Our Favorites,” was greeted with a light response. However, in 2005, Pete and J released “Without a Band” and the next year released “Dressed for Conversation," both had more acclaim. Currently and constantly on tour, the duo is generating a big response with sold out crowds at the Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco and the Double Door in Chicago. The next stops for the guys are in MA, MD and D.C in May. They hope to head to the U.K. for a fourth go-around in the fall. Plus, they are trying to be apart of the USO tours on-top of writing more material. Keep your eyes set on this pulsating pair.

By Lori, who really enjoyed talking to both Pete and J. The picture was taken at the Bowery Ballroom back in March. Pete is on the left, J on the right.

Dear Alaska,

Hey, hey! Listen up ... pay attention ... take notes if you have to. Although the furthest thing from my mind right now is snow, I'm going to tell you about what I feel is one of the best unsigned bands to date ... and, oddly enough, they are all transplants from the snowy arctic that is Anchorage, Alaska.

The Lives Of Famous Men were brought to my attention when they toured with friends in National Product in mid 2007. Singer, Dan Hall's breathy yet passionate vocals caught my concentration as they have a flair that is driven away from the generic pop rock cut-out that everyone seems to be falling into these days. The lyrics are clever and - although typically very short - seem to tell a story without being obvious. I admire bands that are throwing their own twists into stubborn genres these days and it's clear that The Lives Of Famous Men get an A+ for effort in this category. This band not only shakes up its pop and indie rock base, but it adds sharp loungy keys, jazz twists and flamenco undertones for a powerful final product that is hard not to dance to.

I recently had the pleasure of catching The Lives Of Famous Men at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles. Despite equipment issues, the team was amazing! The five guys (Dan Hall - Vocals, Ari Katcher - Guitar, Dylan Mandel - Percussion, Andrew Totemoff - Bass, and Jason Wahto - Keys, Vocals, Guitar) played like they were born for the stage. They have all been playing for quite some time ... it seems they all have backgrounds playing in heavier bands at the start in Alaska. Slowly, they ventured down to Portland, Oregon (which is where they currently all call home) and came together after their respective 'metal' bands broke up.

I encourage you to take a listen to my favorite The Lives Of Famous Men tunes "You're Everyone I Know Right Now" and "Annie Taylor". Take a peek at their tour dates as well ... they are currently making extensive touring rounds and have picked up a couple of shows with Motion City Soundtrack in Alaska! (side note: drummer Dylan Mandel could pass for Justin Pierre's little brother) mtvU has also requested a brief appearance from The Lives Of Famous Men on the Campus Invasion tour (in Philadelphia). Lastly, the Cornerstone Music Festival will be welcoming these guys at the beginning of July for a few performances!

Kooks Krazy

The release of the Konk by The Kooks may be the first time a band released a second album before I was ready for it. I had yet to play out the band’s debut CD, Inside in/Inside out,(is it even possible?), so now I have two albums by the same glorious band on constant rotation. And they can easily just be from a double-disk set because the two albums flow so well. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

It’s great for the USA fans anyway. The momentum is picking up, so why not just give audiences more of what is already getting lots of love in the UK?

While the overall vibe Konk is similar to its predecessor, one thing has obviously changed. The lyrics are a bit more mature- or shall I say more love injected and less testosterone-ized? Instead of singing about getting underneath a girl’s skirt, this time around vocalist Luke Pritchard is actually asking the girl “Do you wanna make love to me?” and revealing “I always thought I’d end up with you.” He even pleads “I miss you and I need you, please don’t go” on the track “Gap.”

The album opens on an acoustic note. And with an accent so fine, what listener really needs anything else? For the Kooks, simplicity will lead to longevity. The songs are clean, yet never dull. It's expected that the tracks translate effortlessly live. Perhaps that's one of the secrets to the band’s success. I for one, can not wait to see them live at Terminal 5 in NYC and see what they’ve got.

Is it June yet?

Standout tracks: "Sway," "Do You Wanna," "Always Where I Need to Be"

*By Joelle, who is pretty sure the ONLY album she actively went to a store and bought in ’07 was the Kooks' debut. They are also the only band in years for whom she actually went and bought their album after hearing just one song.

I am not an American Idol fan.

I'm really not, and I can't stand most of the contestants--winners nor losers (though you gotta admit, despite not selling well, Ruben Studdard was absolutely precious). However, my mom watches it religiously, and last night I walked in on this performance by a fellow named Jason Castro (which, let's be serious, is awesome enough in itself):

After that, I immediately fell in love and scoured YouTube for him, and he's that good all the time. So now, I'll watch A.I. for his performances, then shut it off because I know for a fact that no one will be better.

And really--those eyes!

BAND OF THE WEEK!

I would like to pull back the shades and open the window to let all the light shine down on this band, ladies and gentleman...THE DEAR HUNTER.

I don’t know that Casey Crescenzo (vocals/keyboard) knew how successful his side project, The Dear Hunter, would be when he started it in the early days of 2005. Casey ventured into writing more intimate indie sounding lyrics which was certainly a departure from the alternative post hardcore music that The Receiving End of Sirens had become famous for. In the early stages of The Dear Hunter’s development it was unintended to become a full-time band, however as buzz began to circulate about the unique departure and with a high demand to hear more of what he had up his sleeve, Casey left TREOS and made The Dear Hunter his primary creative work.

In a musical age where electronic beats and cookie cutter lyrical messages are masking the true art of music making, few bands step out of the line up and give listeners something to believe in. The Dear Hunter did and is still doing what many artists tend to be struggling with and straying from these days- making truly ambient and progressive indie style rock organically, it’s not something they stumbled on in the packaged goods section. The Dear Hunter provides a mature yet ambitious marriage of vocals and piano rock driven instrumentals. Their unique sound and impressionability make their performances and music simply wonderful. They have the passion and that will give indie talent such as Circa Survive and As Tall As Lions a run for their money…

If you like music that sounds generic, this band probably isn't for you...

The album that has been released, Act I: The Lake South, The River North, follows an intense story of adolescent struggle and mission of self-discovery. The follow up album (released in 2007) is titled Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Mrs. Lending (a reference made to the title of the first EP released).

This rest is now history, and the now…well...it's something you need to keep an ear open to.

Here are some of my personal fave's-The Dear Hunter
1. Red Hands
2. The Procession
3. City Escape
4. Smiling Swine

Be sure to check The Dear Hunter on their tour with THE FALL OF TROY!

Good News on the Walmart Front!

Wow! So I was surprised to read and see on the news yesterday/today that Wal-mart is no longer going to sue Debbie Shank, a former employee who suffers from severe brain damage. Read her amazing story here:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/law/04/02/walmart.decision/index.html?section=cnn_latest

Its nice to know that even a major conglomerate such as Wal-Mart is showing some kind of heart after of course numerous boycotts and angry consumers first hearing about Shank's story. But that makes me even more happy to know that people really do care about somethings. However, I still won't shop there. =)
