The Sounds at Webster Hall Hot beats, hot Sweds and hot pants

Thursday night started off with a bang. Unfortunately, the bang was more of a thump when Morningwood's guitarist fell off the stage right before doors. No one is really sure exactly how it happened, but it was a show-stopper for the band as the guitarist had to be rushed to the ER. Morningwood tried to make amends with the crowd, giving away a few dozen t-shirts.

The Sounds took the stage a bit earlier and treated the audience to a sexy, spitting, new wave rock n' roll romp, more than making up for the crowd's earlier disappointment. Their energy immediately took over and, in seconds, everyone was having an undeniably amazing time.



For the first few songs we couldn't help but notice lead-singer Maja's barely-there short shorts. It's possible that my friend Sonia and I were even more intrigued by the shorts than guys at the show. Sonia commented that perhaps Maja shouldn't be rocking the shorts quite that short. At first, I agreed, but as the show went on, I realized the shorts epitomized a fuck-you-cool attitude that is so apparent when you listen and especially when you see The Sounds perform. I envied Maja for her explosiveness on stage - squatting, jumping, pulsating, dancing atop the drum set and her sexy fellow Swed band mates. Maja's absolute confidence was captivating and unequivocally sexy.

Remember Athena, Aphrodite or Demeter? Didn’t think so. How about Gaea or Hera? Mmm hmm... Well, here’s the newest Greek Goddess on the block and you won’t be forgetting her name anytime soon: Sofia Toufa.

It’s no surprise that since Planet Verge first met Miss Sofi over a year ago, she has garnered herself a fan base so big that there are even MySpace pages dedicated to her.



”It’s the cutest thing,” she says of her online fans. “I feel so honored and flattered and appreciate it so much. If I can inspire anyone with what I do- that's the most amazing thing to me.”


What she does is make her dreams come true. The spunky German-born entertainer said good-bye to pop star life in her native land (where her R&B act Danacee was signed to Def Jam), bravely boarded a plane and unpacked her bags in Los Angeles.



From there, Sofi’s story continues to turn pages. The one-and-only Butch Walker (Google the name if you’re so unfortunate as to not know it) handpicked her to be one-half of his singer/dancer back-up combo during the Butch Walker and the Let’s Go Out Tonites tour. And thus, the whirlwind began.

Today, Sofi flutters around on stage nightly with Avril Lavigne. They first met during Butch’s “Beth Amphetamine” photo shoot, during which a raven-haired Avril made a guest-appearance.




Later, Avril approached Sofi after watching her on stage during a Let’s Go Out Tonite’s set, Sofi tells. “She said she was going to have auditions to put together a new band and that she'd love for me to come down and audition. I was obviously really flattered but didn't think that she'd actually call.”

Well, she did. And now Sofi collaborates with her partner-in-groove from the Let’s Go Out Tonites-Lindsey Blaufarb- and Craig Hollaman to choreograph all the routines you’ve been seeing on stage during Avril’s tour and her performances on the MTV Video Music Awards and Saturday Night Live.

“We've traveled the world this past year. I had never been to China before so that was exciting, and again there's a bunch of places I hadn’t seen in the USA.”


While on the road with Butch’s bunch, the girls were the minority on the tour bus. With things reversed this time around, the vibe is a bit different. “I hate to say it, but I do feel like girls are a bit more dramatic,” reveals Sofi, continuing, “At the same time, it's kinda nice to have females around that can relate to things that guys obviously can't!”

Things like style must-haves: skinny black jeans, scarves, bandanas, Converse and loads of accessories. This fashionista can’t live without ‘em. One look at her and it’s hardly surprising that she feels most beautiful bearing a new haircut (hot pink, anyone?) and purple eyeliner while being in shape and eating healthy. And when it comes to her wardrobe, Sofi says her philosophy is “Definitely not less is more!” She elaborates, “Classy, not trashy. And I don't like being uncomfortable and having to pull on my clothing all day long.”



With such passion for fashion, it’s only natural that she hopes to have a clothing line in the future, along with a record of her own, a movie and says Sofi, “I better stop before I sound too ridiculous! Seriously, I have endless goals, both personal and business. I just wanna be happy and continue doing what I love to do the most and hopefully help out other people reach their goals.”

While nothing else is confirmed for the immediate future, she’s quick to point out, “So far everything that has happened is not something I had planned out.” (Like also backup singing for Fall Out Boy, The Von Bondies, Rockstar Supernova with Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and Gilby Clarke and The Academy Is). “Everything I'm doing as of now is helping me to get to that point where I'm absolutely ready for it.”

“You know, it's that time of year when you start reflecting,” she concludes on her e-mail pre-show in Minneapolis. “I really enjoy this whirlwind. I don't really wanna get out of it.”

PLANET VERGE: You said you were at Butch's (Walker) Malibu home a few hours before it burnt down. Did you witness any of the fires firsthand?



SOFIA TOUFA: No, I didn't. Me and my friend Johnny were at the house watching the dogs. I'd left the house that night to meet up with another friend. Johnny woke up in the middle of the night and managed to save the dogs and three hard drives while the back of the house was already on fire. I can't believe he got out of there! He left his car and took theirs to fit the dogs!


PLANET VERGE: What most attracts you to a guy?

SOFIA TOUFA: Personality, confidence not cockiness, great sense of humor-somewhat dorky. I'm a sucker for tattoos. The "I'm a dirty looking bad boy clean guy" that has an opinion but isn't judgmental, is worldly and passionate and creative. Know anyone?


PLANET VERGE: Best cure for a broken heart?

SOFIA TOUFA: Great friends that are gonna sit down with you over some sweet potato fries and talk shit about this guy that doesn't see how great you are and that he's missing out, Sex and the City, working out and treating yourself and a hot new date. Don't ever just sit in your room by yourself for days! That just makes it worse.

Give an Animal a Home this Holiday Season

Feeling lonely? Want someone to go on long walks with? Or just cuddle and watch TV next to? Then consider rescuing a dog or cat and give them a new home just in time for holiday pictures.

www.petfinder.com is a fantastic resource for finding animals in shelters across the USA. There's lots of beautiful mixed breeds (which I prefer-both my dogs are healthy, beautiful mixed breeds). And most of all, you'll be giving them a new leash on life.

No need to spend thousands of dollars on a purebred- it doesn't make them any better. My purebred Old English Sheepdog and Golden Retriever both got ill at only 7 years old and sadly had to be put to sleep.

I went to my town's animal shelter this Saturday, fell in love with a little girl named Hazel and went back with my fiance on Sunday to convince him we should take her home. Unfortunately, we're both super allergic to her short hair. But I really wanted to rescue her because she has an incredible survivor story.

Hazel was found on the streets bloody and with deep bite wounds. But despite everything she went through, all she wants to do is give kisses and love you.

Playing with Hazel was my first experience really interacting with a Pit Bull. You hear all the horror stories, and yes many are mean but it's because they are TRAINED to be that way by stupid people. The first thing she did was greet me with kisses (and never stopped) and a waggly tail. She never growled, tried to bite me or do anything else these poor dogs are accused of doing.

In fact, Cocker Spaniels and Chihuahuas are more aggressive by breed then Pit Bulls. Pits have the same aggression level as everyone's favorite family pet, the Golden Retriever.

With that said, meet Hazel and contact the shelter if you can take her home! She's about 8 months old and 45 pounds (but it's all muscle- she's super small)!

One of St. Francis' angels scooped this injured girl up and flew her to the animals shelter for care. With bite wounds and skinny body, Hazel (named after her angel's grandmother) has since healed and gained weight. Despite her previous ordeal, she has not let her past get to her. She is a very loving girl who longs for a sofa or bed of her own to curl up in while her human companions relax nearby. Playful, energetic, and quite a love (expect many many kisses!), Hazel is ready for her new, better life to start, so stop on by and become her new angel.

Iowa's Hidden Gem

Hailing from Ames, Iowa - The Envy Corps has somehow skimmed under the radar here in the States, but the British seem to be quite fond of this midwest indie-rock sweetheart (and rightfully so!). With a mix of Radiohead-like vocals and Modest Mouse sounding guitar riffs, The Envy Corps struck the attention of british label - Vertigo (a spin of Mercury Records) and were quickly signed after landing an opening spot on the 2006 fall tour with The Killers. Word has it, The Envy Corps will pick up a handful of opening slots on an upcoming tour with The Editors! I have been anticipating a live performance from this band for some time and was refreshed to see them in a very intimate local venue called The Nomad last night in Minneapolis! With an inspiring mix of experience from divorce and struggles with alcoholism, lead singer Luke Pettipoole creates emotional lyrics that somehow twist into beautiful, light-hearted happiness. An Envy Corps show feels like a gigantic birthday party with claps and group yelps of excitement. In addition to guitar player, Brandon Darner - the Envy Corps consists of brothers David (bass, synth) and Scott (drums) Yoshimura. Keep your eyes peeled for their first major label album release in early 2008!

The Greatest Surprise of 2007

I can't say it enough-- Silverchair's Diorama is one of the most underrated albums EVER. Practically every song on it should have been a Number 1 radio hit in America.

It appears the band feels that way, too. For perhaps the first time in musical history, a band is promoting a single that was released four years ago. While Silverchair has had smashing success with Young Modern , the band has just announced it will be releasing an iTunes exclusive EP of Diorama-hit "The Greatest View."



When the song was originally released, Planet Verge was printing our second issue. If you recall, we featured the lyric "I'm watching you watching me and I've got the greatest view from here..." on our cover.

Not to put down the songs on Young Modern, because they are phenomenal and on an artistic level very few musicians can ever get to- but I do think "The Greatest View" is better for radio, or at least digital promotions. Now that Silverchair finally have the proper marketing behind them (there was virtually no promotion of Diorama over here), this move makes sense.

Silverchair drummer, Ben Gilles, told Planet Verge that the song closest to his heart is "World Upon Your Shoulders," which is also a Diorama track.

But, he had the most fun recording during one particular Young Modern song.

"'Those Thieving Birds Part 1', 'Strange Behavior,' 'Those Thieving Birds Part 2'. Possibly the most challenging Silverchair song to date (it’s a three part song), but still lots of fun to record. Many hours of work and some tense moments, but very rewarding when you hear it back," Gilles told PV.

A little known fact is that Silverchair lead singer/guitar player and The Presets leader Julian Hamilton are great friends thanks to their Australian roots and similar musical interests. Julian actually co-wrote the smash hit "Straight Lines" along with three other tracks off Young Modern and has been a touring member of Silverchair when he has the time. Julian and Kim from the Presets were also touring members of the Dissociatives - Daniel's 'other band' with Paul Mac. Closing the circle, Daniel contributed guitar work for past Presets records as well as helping write some tunes with them so it's a family affair. The Presets have a new album set for early '08 release.

A look at the world of the charismatic keyboardist for Scary Kids Scaring Kids. Meet Pouyan.

My VERY FIRST ever interview/article assigned to me was with up and coming rock band Scary Kids Scaring Kids. My first interview was with Pouyan. Needless to say, he didn't scare me off... Pouyan has a personality as unique as his name. He is creative and passionate about everything he does. His on stage shirtless antics and his intense interest in film make him unique in his field. He is funny, fun loving, and extremely proud of his band (Tyson, Steve, DJ, Chad, and James) and how far they have come. I have talked with many people throughout my life, I have to say Pouyan is one of the nicest guys I have ever talked with.

Have you ever thought that maybe this wasn’t for you, or you wanted to do something else?

I think everyone has whether they have vocalized it or not, I think everyone has kinda wanted to leave whatever they are doing and do something else especially when you have been in a band for as long as I have…the instability of the future kinda makes you want to go back to college and do something else, but we have all really come together as brothers, we are so close and we understand each other, we all really love what we do and we know each others personalities and that makes it easier to get over the small things. I am happier doing this than anything else I would be doing with my life.

When did you realize just how successful you have become?

To be honest, I think this year. We were able to put that kind of faith in ourselves to believe it ourselves. We have really started to become recognized, RCA picked us up and we were recommended to do a co-headlining tour. It’s cool because we are going to be doing co-headlining tour with a band that we really have looked up to over the years, Haste the Day. Our album is something we couldn’t be more proud of. This has been a really good year for us, and I only see it getting better.

What is the craziest thing to happen to you guys out on tour?

Actually I just thought about this… Touring internationally is probably a bad idea for us…we are a band that likes to have fun every night, and we realize when we are over there that we don’t get to be here to often so we tend to party ten times harder. Last time we were in the UK it was just a mess…there was one night specifically where it just was absolutely insane, I think we were in Scotland…yeah, it was Scotland… We were touring with a band, I think it was Candiria, and somehow or another we all got separated and DJ our bassist passed out and completely drunk in the archway of a shop and Candiria found him just passed out in the middle of the road and he would not have found his way back to the hotel. So, they lifted him up and put him into a cab and DJ didn’t remember what the name of the hotel was so they had to drive around until they found the right one. In the morning the hotel clerk told us that at 4 or 5 in the morning one of us had stumbled into the lobby and walked up to a planter and urinated all over the planter and then went up to their room. Haha… That was fun.

What is the best thing about being on tour?

Having a lot of great bands that have the same community vibe as us and they just want to make it a great time on top of having great shows. We find amazing things to do like play Uno and we develop rivalries and its just a good time.

What are your biggest influences outside of music?

Film definitely, I love movies. I love movies in the style of Eternal Sunshine and Adaptation that have many layers and a lot of depth and are imaginative.

(SIDE NOTE-Film is one of my FAVORITE things to discuss....I could have talked with him for HOURS about Eternal Sunshine)



What are your favorite songs to perform?

I think that Free Again is a lot of fun to perform; I think that it comes across better live than it does on the album; we get to add a little beef to it live. I also love playing the Deep End live.

What are you listening to these days?

I’m in GA now and I have nothing but the radio, but the most recent CD I was listening to is the latest Copeland CD. I also like The Weddings new CD. Pierce the Veil for sure, that’s in constant rotation. Oh, and the Water by Thrice. I am also listening to Jimmy Eat World, growing up in Arizona it was just all about Clarity. I could never bad mouth Jimmy Eat World.

BOYS LIKE GIRLS!

Boy, oh boy, oh boy.

Really, what is there left to say about them? They are a break out band from Boston, MA and they bring out the 12 year old girl in everyone.

I was fortunate enough to go to one of their sold out shows in NYC right before Thanksgiving. I will be completely honest, I had some seriously reservations about the whole thing. I had no idea what their live deal was going to be. While I had attended many a Warped Tour date this past summer, I was never able to catch them perform.

Starting at about 2 in the afternoon the sidewalk outside the Fillmore became the dwelling for screaming fans (most of which wearing Boys Like Girls...or All Time Low tee shirts). I will give them this, they have some of the most dedicated fans I have ever seen.

Boys Like Girls hit the stage, and it was a buffet a day early...well, a buffet of hormones that is. The band opened up with their latest hit single entitled Hero/Heroine, and right away I could feel the energy pulsing from everywhere. Song after song the energy level remained the same. Before the show I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but by the second or third song I was totally into it (kinda unexpectedly). Each song was belted back by the audience (always a good sign), crowd favorites were Thunder, Hero/Heroine, Dance Hall Drug and of course their SMASH hit The Great Escape.

They have a presence that just makes you melt. Boys Like Girls has a stage presence that is undeniable. There performance was certainly consumable for all ages and most definitely provided that "best night of my life" line for the majority of their fans. If and when they come around again, I would certainly like to see them again. They are a light hearted performance that will put a smile on music lovers face.

To Even FURTHER Elaborate on Joelle's Post....

After reading Joelle's post on a recent emailed she received from a reader, I have to say, I am a little bummed about the accusation. Planet Verge was established by Joelle to be a music magazine and have articles written by music journalists, NOT groupies. Her vision was clear and each and everyone of us that writes for Planet Verge have the utmost respect for her and this magazine/online site that she has created.

Personally, music has been my passion since I was 4 years old. I have been playing the violin for 12 years now. A lot of friends are musicians, and I am a musician. When I approached Joelle about the opportunity to write for PV I did so because music is what i understand, it's a world that I had been surrounded by since I was very young, and I wanted to share my experiences...and my opinions. I consider it to be my job... Never would I ever consider what I do to be a mask for livin' a groupie life style. I take my writing seriously, and I take my photography seriously. I have been fortunate enough to become good friends with some of the bands I write about, that does not mean that my relationship with them is anything more than a friendship. Outside of their music world they are people, just like you. They are people I respect, just like I would respect someone I sit next to in a class.


Just for the record, the very last show I went to I wore my Berklee sweats and a So They Say hoodie....not a teeny tiny tank top and jeans that have less material than a tee shirt.

Paramore & Shiny Toy Guns Get Grammy Nods

Dude, are the Grammy Awards getting hip? What is up with our scene bands getting nominations?

"Misery Business" is Paramore's best song, but are the other Grammy-worthy? Shiny Toy Guns are great, but same thing. Is this another sign that the music industry really is in trouble? Or just that more people should read Planet Verge cause we wrote about these bands way before they hit the mainstream?

STG are a really great live band and talented in their style- but it does irritate me at times....

Both bands are nominated for their first major-label releases and quickly rose from the indie scene. I guess it's just weird.....

Paramore Get Grammy Nod For "Best New Artist" As "Riot!" Scores RIAA Gold Certification


Fueled By Ramen recording group Paramore has been nominated as "Best New Artist" at the upcoming 50th Annual Grammy Awards, it was announced this week. The news comes just as "RIOT!," the band's acclaimed second album, has received RIAA gold certification for sales exceeding 500,000 units. Released earlier this year, the album features the breakthrough hit singles, "Misery Business" and "Crushcrushcrush."

The Tennessee-based quartet has been on the road nearly nonstop since the album's June release, most recently headlining a major North American tour with 22 sold out performances. Paramore will ring in 2008 with a live performance on MTV's annual New Year's Eve extravaganza, and then head off to the United Kingdom for a hugely anticipated headline tour that includes two-night stands in such cities as Manchester, London, and Birmingham.

Paramore is set to star on the upcoming cover of Alternative Press's February issue. Last summer, lead singer Hayley Williams was among the stars featured on Alternative Press's July cover, joining a number of her fellow Vans Warped Tour '07 roadmates. Elsewhere, Revolver called "RIOT!" "a masterful mix of springy drum beats, crisp guitar hooks, and (Williams') girlish snarl," while Spin praised the album for its "arena- rocking potential."

"RIOT!" debuted at #20 on the Billboard 200 this past June, marking one of the highest sales and chart debuts in Fueled By Ramen's history (second only to Fall Out Boy). The album's first single, "Misery Business," has proven Paramore's biggest hit to date, reaching the Top 5 at Modern Rock radio, while also scoring at Top 40, Hot AC, and Active Rock. The song's accompanying video also exploded across the MTV spectrum. Having already been a #1 video at MTV2 and a #2 sensation at MTV, the clip is also a top airplay favorite at mtvU, MTV Hits, and MTV.com. In addition, "Misery Business" reached #1 most-played video status at Fuse, with further national play coming on Music Choice and The N.

"Crushcrushcrush," the follow-up single from "RIOT!," has just begun breaking out at Alternative radio nationwide. The track's video – directed by Shane Drake (who previously helmed the "Misery Business" clip) – recently debuted on MTV's TRL, and has already reached #6 on the countdown. "Crushcrushcrush" remains in Big 10 rotation at MTV, while also notching top 10 play at MTV2.

What's more, the clip is receiving further play at Fuse and The N. Both "Misery Business" and "Crushcrushcrush" can be viewed online at www.youtube.com/user/FueledByRamen, where Paramore's videos have scored over 20 million total plays thus far.

Since the release of their debut album, "ALL WE KNOW IS FALLING (Fueled By Ramen; 2005)," Paramore continues to grow its fervent fan following online with each passing day. I find it unfortunate that because most of the Planet Verge staff were born with two X chromosomes that we're being subjected to misogynist accusations. Has "groupie behavior" occurred? Who knows? The private lives of our staffers are just that--private. While I doubt our writers would compromise their journalistic integrity to bag a (rather subjectively) "goodlooking male musician," whatever anyone does in their romantic life is their own business.

I find it unfortunate that critics have overlooked the fact that we've actually satirized "groupie behavior" innumerable times, and most of our loyal readers can both understand and attest to this.

I find it unfortunate that glass ceilings exist, but I also find it unfortunate that they are being replaced with metaphorical Lexan in light of the sexism we've been subjected to recently. I find it unfortunate and hypocritical that we are being criticized for expanding our readership, whereas had a music magazine--which, I should note, is a soft news outlet, seeing as anything entertainment relative is soft news--run predominantly by men pledged allegiance to a pin-up girl site, no one would have given it a second thought.

I find it unfortunate that as women and that as a respected media establishment that we still have to prove ourselves to people who can't look past our racks and birthin' hips.

I do, however, find it fortunate that people care enough to talk smack about us. The opposite of love is not hate. It is indifference. So as far as I'm concerned, keep bringing on the obsession. We love you long time.

Just to clear up the air...

I recently got an email from someone who accused Planet Verge of "selling out," having created the company "so girls could engage in groupie behavior behind a mask of journalism," and "slant towards male good looking musicians."

So I'd like to openly publish the letter I wrote that person back, just in case those horrid thought are floating across any other minds.

To preface, I'd like to state that I began Planet Verge because it was my dream to run my own magazine (NOT SLEEP WITH ROCK STARS-THAT WOULD DISCREDIT EVERYTHING) and write about anything I wanted. In the process, I spent THOUSANDS of dollars to make this happen. I couldn't work a full-time job because I needed the time to pretty much be a one-women show with layout, editing, etc in the first few years. I survived on menial funds from part-time jobs and now have a pretty nice debt. But I'm not complaining because I went for my dream. I made it happen and I have had the most amazing experiences.

So now as Planet Verge thrives into the digital word, and will continue to expand our readership via producing content for the soon-to-be-launched pin-up site, URBAN BOMBSHELLS, I'll leave you with this:

Thanks for your opinion. I'm sorry you feel that way, but anyone who looks into our background can see that we are all established professionals who come together to promote music we like.

We have received acclaim for our efforts as a result of our hard work. Planet Verge was featured in Teen People magazine & on The Style Network's "The Look For Less. Our writers freelance for Alternative Press, Amp, Outburn and other music publications, host red carpet events in LA, do marketing for NIKE, and are journalism majors/graduates, etc.

The fact that we are an all female-staff with a fashion sense obviously will draw the groupie problem, but nobody is posting blogs that can back up your claim.

We write about bands we like and judge them based on their music, NOT their looks. You will also see we strongly support FEMALE artists- Jennifer Arroyo from Suicide City was on a past cover, as were Halo Friendlies when we first began printing. We recently features Aimee Allen on the blog and have 2 more female artist articles in the works. (PS-- we also often spotlight successful females in the industry, like Carrie Hughes, Music Supervisor at MTV).

Personally, I like pin-up girls and am proud to be involved with a company like Urban Bombshells that has a similar appreciation for beautiful women outside the Hollywood image of perfection.

I have received many fan letters from girls saying I empowered them to go into the journalism field or start their own music sites. That tells me I'm doing something right.

Stop paying attention if it bothers you so much.

BONE PALACE BALLET TOUR!

Just When You Think You Couldn’t Find A Better Tour....

As unfortunate as the weather may have been on Monday, the music was far from it. The Nokia theater was hit with more than just some rain and fog- it was hit with some of the most anticipated bands on the rise. It was one of the last stop on the Bone Palace Ballet Tour. Each of the bands brings their own flair to the stage this created variation in the style of their performances, but all the sounds are married by their unique underlying alternative-rock foundation. There was nearly something for everyone who loves rock music.

The Bone Palace Ballet Tour had more talented acts than fans could know what to do with. As much of a tragedy as this is, kids are often hard pressed to find a tour that has more than one band that they love…this one did. Scary Kids jumped on board with the likes of The Devil Wears Prada, Emery, and Chiodos (headliner) to form one of the craziest, most talent packed tours of 2007. There’s more noise, more talent, more merch, and more antics.

Almost every band on the tour was promoting a new release and showcasing their new songs. Each set was musically moving and powerfully energetic grabbing the crowd and running with each song they played. Usually you go to a tour like this to see one or two of the bands playing, but for this show you go wanting to see all. There was not a band on the bill that didn't make you wanna dance and scream.

The excitement outside the venue started around 2 pm when loving fans started to line the sidewalks…keep in mind; doors were at 6:30. As I walked by the groups of kids forming outside the venue, I could see and feel in the inaudible displays of excitement. I will never tire of seeing those little pre-show twitches- the ever present ear to ear smile, the perfectly parted and sometimes gelled hair, the rolling of the feet (which are often being stowed away in Chucks), the precision eyeliner, and the point and shoot cameras, and the excitement emanating from every breath they took. You could hear the screams as the venue doors opened as fans prayed for a glimpse.


THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA



It was my first time seeing The Devil Wears Prada and my expectations were high; I am fan of their latest album Plagues and had hoped that they would be able to translate the hypnotizing metal core sound into a reality on the stage. They exceeded my expectations. Mike grabbed the mic and within seconds was expelling a power house of vocals. Not only is he only about 19 years old, he is probably one of the most consistently talented "screamers" in the biz...his singing isn't horrible either. The melodic riffs and thumping harmonies that accompany the vocals are nothing to look past. One thing I loved about the performance was every bit of energy that Mike expelled to the crowd, the crowd reciprocated.



While this band may be criticized for being just another metal core band, I think they need to take another listen. They may be following the metal core lead, but they have their own unique touch that in my eyes lends itself to longevity and exploration of the genre that others may never have the guts to venture into. They are all still very young guys, two of them just graduated high school for goodness sake, they still have much to experience, for experience is what often takes talented group of musicians and turns them into a solid successful band. If this is where they are today…


SCARY KIDS SCARING KIDS



Enter Scary Kids Scaring Kids. I have seen them more times than I can count, well, it's more like I lost count. What can I say? This band never ceases to amaze me with their consistent jaw dropping performance. SKSK was my first interview EVER, and whenever they are around I try and make it out to their show to give some support. Having to go to a lot of shows is the name of the game with music journalism, the bands that truly stick out in my mind at the end of the day are not necessarily bands that produced an amazing album, but they are more often than not bands that blew me away with a live performance. For me, Scary Kids is one of those bands.



Scary Kids has the ability to take alternative rock to the next level and leave you with a high of music that is indescribable. Between the ever maturing vocals of Tyson and the catchy, catchy tunes bellowing from Pouyan's keys you can not help but get drawn in. The guitar riffs are always dead on, and even with rockin' a new drummer, they never skip a beat. They performed many new songs, such as Degenerates, The Deep End, and Faces along with older tunes like The City Sleeps in Flames. Scary Kids performance in NYC really impressed me, the way that the performed (dead on) and the way that they interact with the crowd and draw them in is truly something cool to watch. They are a band that really gives the crowd something to scream over. Their performance is always filled with elements that draw in the crowd; there was never a dull moment.





It is one thing to be able to pull of a performance and leave your fans wanting more, it is another to play EVERY performance and leave everyone wanting more. Even though there has been some speculation that the sound departure from their last album to their current release was premature and something that their fans might not be ready to greet with open arms, I beg to differ. Open your arms wide because their sound and talent played and displayed on this album is larger than you could ever get your arms around, so start wrapping your ears around it folks, be part of this stream towards the very top. There new sound is fitting to their musical progression and drive to always be creating the best music they can, but more so, creating something that they are proud of and will be proud of 40 years from now.


EMERY



Emery is another band that I have experienced either hit or miss success as far as their albums and recorded songs go, I think that with their songwriting they either hit the nail on the head as far as a consumable sound that their fans will dig, or they just slightly miss, however, they are a band that is always great live. Each charismatic member brings something entertaining to the performance and always leaves you with a smile. While their album may not grab you their performance will leave you a fan. At first thought their music is not necessarily the perfect match for this style tour, but after hearing their new stuff and watching their live act, there is not doubt that they are certainly a great band to have in the line up and an incredible talent. They have been around for a little longer than some of the other bands, their experience shows. They know what their fans love, and they certainly give it to them. I enjoyed seeing Emery perform again, and would never pass up another opportunity to see them.


CHIODOS



CHIODOS! (chee-O-dose) I have been corrected many a time. Boys and girls, it is pronounced CHEE-O-DOSE. The show got kicked off with the spotlight on Craig, he opened the show with a light acoustic song that grabbed everyone’s attention, and then immediately following the rest of the band hit the stage- entangled the crowd in rock euphoria. Craig's ability to do vocal gymnastics and make his voice soar to reach hair raising notes and send chills down your spine is undeniable. The unique way in which Craig's vocals and dynamic lyrics compliment the insane instrumentals is a testament to the overall connection between band members. The dynamic guitar riff’s and heart pounding bass lines generate alternative rock bliss. The intensity and concentration that each band member brings to the stage makes watching their performance more than just a live concert, it makes it an entire musical experience. The way that the band incorporated orchestral schemes gave their harder rock sound a soft edge. When Craig looks out into the crowd his eyes undoubtedly meet your and the music and message becomes personal. Making a connection with the crowd is one of the most challenging tasks a band of this nature has to conquer, and they have. During the band’s set they performed older tunes along with newer songs such as “Is it Progression If a Cannibal Uses a Fork?” and “Lexington (Joey Pea Pot with a Monkey Face)”.




While their new album Bone Palace Ballet is incredibly complex and multi-layered (kinda like an onion) the band can perform it, they wrote an album that is certainly a little out there, but it is musically advanced and conveys each member’s talent and creativity- their performance is nothing less than that.

Bad News Is So Good

Just had to drop a quick note and urge you all to go listen to my favorite new song, "Bad News," by Aimee Allen. I'm really digging the 1920's vibe, sorta like "I'm Not Cool," by Sohodolls. Wouldn't be fun if more artists were more adventurous in their sound and jumped outside the box to explore a musical style other than the one that's expected from them?



Aimee wrote this one for the ladies. We can all relate to this one. Well,
actually she wrote it for a TV show pilot, but still. She's got a lot on the horizon, including recording another solo album and writing songs for the film "Pretty Ugly People."

Mind your manners.

I'm not sure when etiquette went out of style, but I'm here to refresh you. I will leave out the petty nonsense (such as which fork to use for which course of a meal) and get to the important things people seem to be ignoring lately.


1. Say "Bless you."
This should be self-explanatory, but apparently it isn't. So many people wait for someone else to speak up. It's not like you're proposing a c'oup d'etat at Congressional hearing. You're simply being polite to someone who sneezed. Is it that intimidating?

2. Hold the door for the person behind you.
Because if they didn't do the same for you, you'd complain about it too.

3. RSVP.
If you are invited to an outing, you need to call to confirm or decline. If something comes up at the last minute, your host, if gracious, will surely be able to understand--just call them to inform so they aren't waiting for hours for you in vain. Or, in my case, twenty minutes, after which I'll do my own thing anyway.

4. And on that note, also take no for an answer.
If someone declines an invitation, leave it alone. Harassing them won't make them want to hang out with you.

5. Think of your audience before you speak.
If you are at a job interview, would you drop the F-bomb? Then don't do it when meeting someone's parents.

6. If you're idiotic enough to smoke, don't blow it in someone else's face.
Is there anything less attractive? If you want to destroy your lungs, that's your prerogative, but don't drag (no pun intended) the rest of us down with you.

7. Say "Thank you."
C'mon, we're not obligated to do nice things for you.

8. Don't chew with your mouth open or talk with your mouth full.
Nobody wants to see that, and the "seafood" joke is old.

9. Limit your PDA.
I'm a romantic deep down, but I don't need to see anyone playing tonsil hockey at a shopping mall. Hand holding, the occasional peck, that's fine. But leave the literal tongue-lashings, gropings, and everything beyond it for the privacy of your own home, car, closet, what have you.

10. Unless it's an emergency, limit cell phone conversations to private areas.
Not only don't most of us care about your business, the ones who do tend to be identity thieves. If you are reciting your Social Security or credit card numbers over the phone in public, there's a chance a dishonest person will hear you, and there's a chance said person will ruin your credit for possibly the rest of your life. That, and no one really needs to hear what Kelly wore to Lizzie's party when she showed up with Megan's exboyfriend who's like, soooooo hot.

DANCE GAVIN DANCE!!

Dance Gavin Dance! is one of the rising talents in the alternative rock world, however with recent hardships there has been speculation as to whether or not the band will be able to bounce back... Step aside, there's only room for believers. DGD is feeling stronger and more ready to conquer the music world than ever. Here's a look into the REAL world of Dance Gavin Dance! with Jonathan Mess (vocals) and Eric Lodge (bass)...

This is one of those annoying questions that you have probably
heard a thousand times, but how did you guys come up with your name?
not too sure. its just one of those names we came up with that made no
sense..it is pretty random and doesn't lead to anything. we had to
play our first show and Dance Gavin Dance was all we had at the time. We
planned to change it following our first couple local shows, but never
got around to it. I guess it just stuck

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard
you?
This is one of those questions that usually however you answer it someone will say no you don't sound like that or that's not the right genre. So we usually try to say we are a heavier rock band. We get called screamo and post-hardcore a lot though.

How has your sound evolved since you put out your first EP in
2006?
I think we figured how our band was going to work, for the most part, going into writing downtown battle mountain. With the EP things were taken a lot less seriously, we weren't signed and the songs were less the whole band and less planned. The full length is a lot more technical and a lot more time was spent on it.

Describe your new album (Downtown Battle Mountain) in one word.
Either dazed or confused

In DGD's history, what was the best show you have ever played?
I guess our best shows have been the ones where crazy things happen. In San Antonio we were all mad at each other and I guess the crowd could tell, we were acting really weird on stage and trashed the drum set and got in a huge argument and threw things at each other. Another time we got shut down on stage in the middle of our set cause we were playing at a church venue and i guess our cd has cussing in it
apparently, haha. Then they wouldn't pay any of the bands and there was a huge scene and the bands and crowd were yelling at all the venue employees.

What was the most embarrassing thing to happen to you on tour?
Our ex singer Jonny didn't show up to the beginning of our set at saints and sinners in front of a good 2000 people or so. We played our intro and part of our first song without him until he randomly showed up on stage, pretty awkward.

What is your favorite song to perform?
Surprise! I'm from cuba, everyone has one brain.

What are your biggest influences?
I'm gonna go ahead and not really answer this question. We are writing a
new record and all we have been listening to right now is rap, but the new songs don't really sound hip hop influenced, we have an unhealthy obsession with lil wayne right now. There hasn't been anything that has come out lately that any of us have gotten into. So i guess the new record will be completely sub consciously influenced.

What are your 'tour essentials'?
We all generally have a nintento DS, an Ipod, some vitamins, favorite hoodie and jeans, and a book or two. Food wise, costco size bags of trail mix or cereal is all you can store at a time cause we are really messy and if you keep too much food in the van it gets crushed by some blind stoner.

Do you enjoy playing festivals and big tours (like a Warped Tour
type situation) or small venues better?
They both have good points to them. With small venues you get to go into the crowd and its more intimate for you and the audience, and a lot of the time you get way more into the performance. With the big tours and festivals you are farther from the crowd cause of the barricade, so that sucks, but being in front of so many people usually makes up for that, also the bigger clubs usually have really good sound which is nice as well.

With the recent loss of Jonny, you guys really seem to be ready
to move forward in a positive direction, how are you guys doing??
We are doing better than ever, we are making a lot of headway on the new album, we have started recording demo tracks, and our singer search is almost done. We will probably have/announce our new singer in the next few weeks. We are also really excited about how the new music is turning out as well. We will also be touring during the beginning of next year and then finishing the new album and recording it.

Where do you see your band in the few years?
Hopefully still writing, recording, and touring like we have been, and most of all still enjoying it.

What do you think is the hardest thing about being a band?
Well first you have to love what you do because you have to be okay with the fact that making money should and never will be a priority or necessarily happen. Also your band is like a family, its can also be like having 4 or 5 other girlfriends, and being in close proximity with those people at all times can be rough, so keeping everything in order is a priority

What have you all learned about yourselves personally since you
have formed this band and been touring and experiencing such success?
We have all become much more laid back and relaxed. We've developed such a high level of tolerance that really nothing affects us. We're not emotionless, just down for whatever.

Final words... Go for it.
Our new record comes out next year.. we feel like its the purest thing we've ever done and are all really excited on it. thanks to our fans and everyone for sticking with us. we wont disappoint.

Ads that must have been written by preppies....

When you come across the new issue of OK Magazine, be sure to flip to page 82. There's a really convincing ad for tattoo removal that features a bride with a hideous ink outline on her back. "Tina," the incredibly believable newlywed (and I say that sarcastically) claims that her tattoo led to her divorce. Well, it caused the fight between Tina and her in-laws on her Big Day, and then the ugly fading of her wedded bliss. And now that Tina is about to embark down the aisle a second time, she MUST use the in-home tattoo fade system, WreckingBalm, to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again.

I'd like to meet the marketing people at this company. They can hire me to teach them reality.

First of all, that is the most unconvincing advertisement ever.

Second, they actually show a before and after picture and note that the level of fading they obviously photoshoped to perfection is "not typical."



If I were a bride-to-be (which I am), with many visible tattoos (which I do have) and wanted to cover them up for my wedding day (which I will NOT be doing), I wouldn't even fall for this product.



Can't they just be simple and say "Got a tattoo and changed your mind? You need WreckingBalm." Or something along those lines. That would be much more effective and intriguing then composing a story so unbelievable it's not even worth going to the Web site to investigate (although I did-but only to see if they had the ad to post up there for you).


The slogan for this "Tattoo Problem #7" is "Let them see you, not your tattoo."

What many completey clean skinned folks don't understand is that those of us who PROUDLY wear ink consider to be a part of us. I'm so used to my fore-arm tattoo that I don't even notice it anymore. It's just my arm. I'll admit that I totally freaked out actually seeing such a huge piece of art on me at first and woke up the next morning wishing it was just a dream. But I love it, just as I had calculated for a year before I got it done. It was just an adjustment, not a mistake.



Yes, mistake. That's another word the super-cool staff at WreckingBalm use to describe tattoos. "Go ahead and get another tattoo-Your mistake is only skin deep," it reads.

Are you all laughing with me now? Do you all suffer through hours of pain from a needle digging into your skin by mistake?

Let's just pretend this ad was meant for those tramp-stamp wearing little misses who think their bugs bunny tattoo makes them sexy and call it a day.




*Joelle, who is highly agrivated by everyone close to her that asks her if she plans on covering up her tattoos for her wedding because obviously they don't know her at all!

MTV just burned Butch Walker worse than the Malibu fires did to his home. The headline on MTV.com is Avril Lavigne Producer Butch Walker Was Renting Flea's Malibu House; He 'Lost Everything'.



Any Butch Walker fan will tell you that headline should read

"Best frontman of our generation, Butch Walker...."

"The producer who can make anyone sound great, Butch Walker..."

"The songwriter no one can penn a better Pop tune than, Butch Walker..."

I think you get the point. Butch deserves recognition and acclaim for a whole lot more than just working with Avril. So much that I am resurrecting a tribute we did to him in a print edition of Planet Verge two years ago and putting it online.

It's awful that Butch lost all his creations. His music has shaped all our lives and we're lucky to be able to experience it firsthand.

When it all comes down to it, material things don't matter. It's the memories from the road, the feelings of seeing people's smiling faces while you perform for them, the little things that shape your live and who you are. For all of us, not just Butch.


Events like this really make you appreciate what you have and who is in your life. Live your dream...and all that.

In a tragic turn of events, it has come to light that the rental home owned by Flea that burned in the Malibu, California, wildfires over the weekend was being occupied by Avril Lavigne producer Butch Walker — and he lost everything in the blaze.

Walker was touring New York at the time of the incident, and "had just consolidated my entire recording studio and house from Atlanta into the one house in Malibu," the songwriter/producer, who has also worked with Pink, Fall Out Boy, the Academy Is..., Tommy Lee and others, said in a press release. "I lost everything I've ever owned. Every master of every song I've ever recorded, every piece of recording equipment, guitars, drums and things I've collected over the years, cars, motorcycles, every family memorial, heirloom, picture and document we ever had. ... Gone. I feel like I finally know the difference between 'going back' and 'going home.' "

Over the weekend, Flea said in a text message obtained by the Los Angeles Times that his $4.8 million home in Corral Canyon was "burnt to a crisp" by the fires on Saturday morning. According to TMZ.com, a second, $10 million Malibu home owned by Flea — the one in which he currently resides — did not burn. The one that did was a house that the bassist had been renting — most recently to Walker — and currently has up for sale, the site reports.

Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose also had a close call when the fires burned his roof and singed some of his property. According to a report on KCAL-TV, Rose's assistant said the rocker "was with the hose everywhere" on his property, fighting to save his home.

The fires, which have largely been contained, were the worst in Malibu in years, according to the Times. In late October, another series of fires forced evacuations in the area but hit the San Diego area much harder.
